Pre-Law Timeline

Are you wondering what you need to do to prepare and apply for law school, and when to do it? Follow the timeline below! These steps take you through each year of your undergraduate career at the U of M.

FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEAR:
  • Join the Pre-Law Society, a U of M student group.
  • Attend free workshops about law school through the Career and Community Learning Center. (These short, helpful workshops include  "Should I Go to Law School?" and "Applying to Law School".)
  • Start developing a rapport with professors and advisors who you might consider asking for a recommendation letter later.
  • Build leadership skills through internships, student organizations, and volunteer positions.

JUNIOR YEAR:
(Or 2 years before you'd like to start law school)

October:
  • Visit the Career and Community Learning Center (the pre-law advising office) for an LSAT/LSDAS registration and information book. For this you can stop by our 135 Johnston Hall office without an appointment.
  • Obtain LSAT preparation materials or register for an LSAT prep course.
  • Attend the Graduate and Professional School Day event at the U. It's offered every fall semester.
Between November and December:
  • Begin researching law schools.
March:
  • Register for the June LSAT and begin preparing for it.
April: June:
  • Take the LSAT.

SENIOR YEAR:
(Or 1 year before you'd like to start law school)

Throughout Fall semester:
  • Attend law school forums in various cities.
August:
September:
  • Begin looking at application requirements and timelines for schools you plan to apply to.
  • Start filling out the applications.
  • Register for LSDAS about 6 weeks before you send your applications to law schools.
October:
  • Take the LSAT. (Taking the October LSAT will allow you to submit your law school applications early.)
November to December:
  • Submit law school applications in time for schools’ early review process.
December:
  • Take the LSAT if you didn’t in October. (Taking this LSAT doesn’t leave enough time to apply early to law schools, but will still allow you to apply to attend law school in the coming fall.)
February:
  • Note that there is a February LSAT, but it is not recommended if you plan to attend law school in the coming fall. Take an earlier LSAT.
  • Begin filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) materials, if you choose.
March to June:
  • Wait for law school responses. Visit the schools to which you are accepted.

Good luck applying to law school!
