What Do I Include in My Application
and Where Should I Send it?

Below you'll find a detailed list of what to include with each law school application, followed by where to send each item. After that you'll find brief info about application fee waivers. Here's what to include:

  • Completed law school application form

  • Your U of M transcript
  • Law School Admission Test (LSAT) scores
    • Visit www.lsac.org for information on LSAT test dates
    • Your LSAT test score is reported by the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS)

  • Recommendation Letters

  • Personal Statement

  • Resume: Many school require this, but not all. If given the option to submit a resume, it's highly recommended that you do.
Resume format: Students applying to law school frequently ask us what resume format law schools prefer. There isn't one special format to follow for law school applications. Some schools may ask you to include specific information on your resume, or to follow specific instructions. In that case, be sure to follow their instructions. For general information about resumes, see the resume section here.

  • Items for further consideration:
    • Addendum
    • Dean's Certification (only a handful of schools ask for this)
Each law school's application will be different. Allow plenty of time to complete each one. Most application forms can be completed online.

Where to Send Your Application Materials:

  • To the Law School Data Assembly Service (which can be accessed through the LSAC site):
    • Official Transcript
    • Letters of Recommendation
    • LSAT scores will be included in the Law School Report

  • To the Law School
    • Application and Fee (see below for fee-waiver info)
    • Personal Statement
    • Resume

What if I can't afford to apply for law school?

You can apply for the Law School Admission Council Fee Waiver program. This waiver is rarely given out, and you must demonstrate strong financial need. The Law School Admission Council states this about waivers for application fees: "Because the cost of these services is only a fraction of the cost of a legal education, the need criterion is considerably more stringent than for other financial aid processes. Only those with extreme need should apply."
  • Fee waivers can be downloaded here from the LSAC Web site.
