Law School Application:
What's an Addendum?

Your law school application (or related materials) may include personal or professional information you want to clarify or explain to the law school admissions office. If so, an addendum is the way to do that.

An addendum is a brief explanation on a sheet of paper separate from your personal statement. (Use your personal statement to focus on other, more positive topics.)

It may be helpful to use an addendum to explain the following situations:
  • poor grades you feel don't reflect your true abilities
  • gaps in your history (for example, if you weren't in school for a period of time)
  • a criminal record
  • low LSAT test score (a score you feel doesn't accurately reflect your potential for success in law school)
Note: Don't try to explain away a low LSAT score by saying you "had a bad day". That won't go over well with law school admissions offices. (Remember that many law-school grades are also based on a one-day test, so they'll wonder if you might have a "bad day" during those too.)
When addressing weaknesses in your application or background, be brief and be sincere. Assure the admissions committee that a similar weakness is unlikely to occur again. Weak excuses (like "I was having a bad day") won't be helpful, and could actually hurt your application rather than help it.
