What is mentoring?

Mentoring in the CLA Mentor Program is a relationship between a student (mentee) and a working professional (mentor) that focuses on career planning.



Program goals

  • Provide professional support and encouragement to students.
  • Bring together students and mentors based on common career interests and experiences.
  • Help students connect the dots between academics and career opportunities.
  • Provide job-search tips for a specific profession.
  • Provide opportunities for networking.
  • Help students gain "real world" understanding of how to maximize and market a liberal arts education.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

Students:
  • Commit for one school year (October–April).
  • Follow the application instructions and deadline.
  • Attend a mandatory information session (date selected upon registration).
  • Attend program Kick-Off Event to meet mentor and plan activities together.
  • Keep in touch with your mentor monthly via meetings, phone or e-mail (through April).
  • Attend the year-end Appreciation Event in spring
Mentors:
  • Commit from October through April (one school year).
  • Register any time.
  • You'll be notified in October if we have a student whose interests match yours. If we have a student match for you, we will provide contact information.
  • Attend program Kick-Off-Event to meet mentee and plan activities together.
  • Keep in touch monthly with mentee via meetings, phone or e-mail (through April).
  • Attend year-end Appreciation Event in spring


EXPECTATIONS OF PARTICIPANTS


Students:
  • Fulfill an October to April commitment
  • Initiate and maintain contact with mentor.
  • Approach the mentoring relationship with an open mind.
  • Set realistic goals with mentor.
  • Arrive prepared and on time to all arranged meetings.
  • Notify CLA Mentor Program staff of any questions or concerns.
Mentors
  • Fulfill an October to April commitment.
  • Help mentee establish meaningful and realistic goals.
  • Approach the mentoring relationship with an open mind.
  • Provide career advice and tips to student mentee.
  • Notify the CLA Mentor Program staff with any questions or concerns.

About Us
The CLA Mentor Program is offered in cooperation with the Career and Community Learning Center, the CLA Alumni Society, and the CLA Dean's office. This program is one of 16 University-wide Mentor programs linked by the University of Minnesota Alumni Association's Mentor Connection.
