What Can I Do With a Major in ... Workshop: Also known as WCIDWAMIs (pronounced "wicked-whammies"), these workshops are designed to help you brainstorm some careers that are related to your major. Workshops are offered during fall and spring semesters highlighting different CLA majors. Graduates from these majors, along with a representative from the academic department and a career counselor will discuss the many options open to you. To find out which departments are represented each semester, contact us at (612) 624-7577.

From Textbook to Planner: How To Succeed At Your First Job After Graduation: Learn how to develop on-the-job-strategies to help you succeed in your first job after graduation. Attend this workshop to learn about developing good work habits, establishing positive boss/co-worker relationships, and avoiding potential pitfalls on your first job.

Pre-Law School Workshop: What are your chances for being admitted to law school? What types of activities can enhance your chances of being admitted to law school? Is law school the right choice for you? Learn about law school as well as the preparation and application process by attending this helpful and informative workshop.

Resumes and Cover Letter Workshop: Learn to create strategic resumes and cover letters! We'll discuss what employers look for in resumes and cover letters and help you begin thinking about the best ways of presenting your own experience.

Resume and Cover Letter Critique: Get help with your resume, cover letter or thank you note by bringing them to 135 Johnston Hall for a critique. You must have a hard copy of your document to attend. We strongly recommend attending the Resume Workshop before using this clinic. Critiques are held on a walk-in basis daily in 135 Johnston Hall from 9:00am-4:00pm.

Job and Internship Search Strategies: If you're relying on want ads, you're not using the best search strategies for jobs and internships. We'll help you determine the most effective ways to get a job or internship that fits you.

Effective Interviewing: Want to feel more confident in your interviews for a job, internship or graduate/professional program? This workshop covers how to prepare for interviews, how to present yourself in an interview, and how to follow up. We'll also discuss how to use the interview as a way to evaluate whether the position is a good match for you.

Mock Interviews: Here is a chance for you to practice your interviewing skills. The structure of the mock interviews has two parts: (1) 15-20-minute individual interviews which will be videotaped, and (2) review and critique of the individual interview. If you are interested in keeping the video of your session, you must provide your own videotape. Expectations:

  • Register for your preferred session by calling 612-624-7577 at least 3 business days in advance.
  • Bring a copy of a job/internship listing or a brief graduate/professional program description for which you are or would like to be interviewing to the mock session. If you don't have a specific job listing, bring in a few examples of job postings of interest to you.
  • Know who your potential employer is: research the employer's/program's situation and be able to address it during the session.
  • Bring at least one question that you are concerned about answering.
  • Dress appropriately, as if this were a real interview.
