Personality Style and Interest Inventories (Tests)

Students often ask if we have any assessments or tests that will tell them which careers would be a good match for them.

No one assessment will give you all the answers, but we do offer multiple assessments that can provide you with some helpful guidance--the Strong Interest Inventory (SII) + Skills Confidence Inventory, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI):

  • The newly revised Strong Interest Inventory (SII) + Skills Confidence Inventory are administered together. The SII will help you understand your interests. The Skills Confidence Inventory will assess the way you perceive your ability to perform certain tasks and activities. (It does not assess your potential to develop skills or acquire new areas of proficiency.) Together, the results from both inventories will provide you with a thorough self-portrait as you consider major and career choices. The results will identify possible occupations and/or work activities that align with your interests. They'll also provide insight into your confidence level for certain activities. If you're thinking about taking the SII + Skills Confidence Inventory, keep in mind that your personality, values and actual skill levels are not measured with these inventories.

  • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assesses personality traits and preferences and then suggests majors and careers that would be a good match for you. The Myers-Briggs focuses on four personality areas: 1) your mental focuses and what energizes you, 2) how you process information, 3) how you make decisions, and 4) how you respond to the outside world. Your results will give you pointers about the majors, careers, and work environments you might find most satisfying.
Fee: Each assessment is $15 (covers materials and processing).

If you're interested in either of these assessments, stop by the Career and Community Learning Center's 135 Johnston Hall office, or call us at 612-624-7577 for more info. After completing the inventory(ies) online, you will schedule an appointment with a career counselor, who will interpret and explain your results, and discuss your possible next steps.

Note about Eligibility:
Like all Career and Community Learning Center workshops and career counseling services, these assessment tests are available only to current CLA students and to recent CLA graduates (up to one year after graduation).
