Web Administrator, University of Minnesota, College of Liberal Arts

Name: Jennifer Mein

Major(s): Sociology – L/C/D

Current Job Title: Web Administrator

Current Organization: University of Minnesota; College of Liberal Arts

Brief description of your job:

I have three parts to my job: technical, creative, and managerial. For the technical aspect I am responsible for the CLA web server and streaming media server. I set up web space and accounts and keep the servers running well and secure. For the creative part of my job, I design web sites for CLA units. And finally, for the managerial aspect, I oversee web services for CLA which includes web design project management and supervising a team of student designers.

Other job titles since graduation:

Project Manager/Trainer for technology enhanced learning tool (UMN-CLA)
Systems Consultant (IT consulting company)

How have you found out about these positions?

Through people I have met while at the University. Prof. Ron Anderson and Advisor Kathie Simon Frank - both from the Sociology department - were great mentors and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.

What skills from your degree are you using in your current work?

My general liberal arts education provided me with the skills to work well with people, research, solve problems, and be creative.

What advice do you have for current liberal arts students with your major?

CLA and the University of Minnesota in general are large. To get the most of your education you need to get involved and meet people. The act of getting involved and the process of meeting new people will open numerous opportunities to gain experience and new skills. I also recommend visiting the CCLC for internship and volunteer opportunities in your field of interest.

How have you gained skills that you didn't get from your degree that are necessary for jobs or jobs you have previously held?

Perhaps it's the atmosphere of working in higher education, but I am frequently provided with opportunities to get involved and/or to learn new skills. Or, perhaps it's the field of information technology constantly changing that forces me to gain new skills to ensure superior service to CLA. It could also be the people I work with and the people I serve who support and challenge me. I think all of these things keep me on my toes and make me love my job.
