Marketing Manager

Kristine Royer
Major(s):
Spanish and Marketing
Current Job Title: Not Available
Organization: Carlson Companies

Brief description of your job:
Responsible for strategy and development of mid‑market client base, including all business travel clients who spend less than $5 million annually. Develop and manage marketing partnerships with IBM, FedEx, and other small and medium business leaders. Other duties include sales channel analysis, competitive intelligence, and management of CRM tool.

Other job titles you have held:
Management Development Trainee (1 year), Consumer Marketing Strategist (1.5 years)

How have you found these positions?
Through Carlson Career Services and networking internally in company.

What skills from your degree do you use in your current work?
I have used my marketing degree every day. I have used Spanish degree to help manage 3‑week, 500+ person incentive trip to Spain.

What advice do you have for current students?
1) Network, network, network! By using all of the programs and services offered to you via CLA and other college career services (such as mentorship programs, company presentations, practice interviewing skills, etc.), you will develop a network of corporate recruiters and corporate contacts that will last you a lifetime! 2) Know yourself well. Take personality and career interest inventories to learn your strengths and weaknesses. Be able to articulate these during interviews. 3) Get well‑rounded. Liberal Arts majors are prized everywhere because of their well‑rounded education. Take advantage of the multitude of class options and majors. If you have extra credits to fill, take classes that genuinely interest you; you're more likely to get a better grade and you will have something to talk about during interviews. 4) Don't slack your senior year. If you are thinking AT ALL about going to graduate school, don't cruise through your senior year by taking cushy classes, pass/fail grades, or graduating early. Graduate schools want people who like to learn, don't take shortcuts, and work hard to get the best education possible. 5) Be a leader. It's not enough anymore to be in a club. Nowadays, in this tough job market and with more and more outstanding candidates coming out of school, you have to show that you are a leader. Be an officer of a club, start a new club, chair a committee, volunteer for a special project. Anything you can do to set yourself apart through leadership and initiative will be highly valued.
