Human Resources Manager, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota

Judy Donohue

Major(s): English

Minor(s): History

Additional Degrees:

Current Job Title: Human Resources Manager

Organization: Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota

Brief description of your job:

I provide a broad range of HR Services to a large statewide non profit organization, including outreach and recruitment, employee relations consultation, training policy and procedure development and interpretation and workplace investigations. Also admin duties such as supervision, affirmative action and diversity planning.

Other job titles you have held:

Customer Service Rep, Personnel Specialist, Claim Representative. HR exclusively since 1997.

How have you found these positions?

Networking mostly. When I was hired by LSS 11 years ago, it was in the newspaper. It was also a different job than I am in now. Through development opportunities, I have been promoted several times.

What skills from your degree do you use in your current job?

Analytical skills, communication (I do a lot of writing in my job). Ability to relate to people and talk about a variety of things.

What advice do you have for current students?

I started out my career wanting to be in HR, and after a few detours that is where I landed. However, I learned something from everything I did, because I like to learn. I chose a Liberal Arts degree so I could be exposed to a wide range of subjects and learning opportunities.
