Minor(s): Latin American History Current Job Title: Executive Director Organization: Minnesota American Indian Chamber of Commerce Brief
description of your job: The MAICC is the oldest ethnic specific
Chamber in Minnesota and one of only a few state wide chambers. I
work representing American Indian Businesses in the Public and Private
Procurement Sectors by advocating for utilization of American Indian
Businesses. I work with the Tribal Governments by advocating for
economic development policy.
Other job titles you have held: Marketing Coordinator, Program Coordinator
How have you found these positions? By using my personal and professional networks.
What skills from your degree do you use in your current work?
My understanding of the Minnesota and Twin Cities history including the
legal framework for Tribal nations comes directly from my degree
education.
What advice do you have for current students?
Find by design or purpose a group of friends outside of your degree to
meet with, even if it is for a weekly lunch or coffee. Discuss your
ideas, schoolwork, etc. By associating outside of your field you can
not rest on ideas that are accepted as "given." Hopefully,
everything you say must be explained or it will be challenged.
This will increase your own understanding of the knowledge you are
gaining and teach you to speak from your own ideas, not just what you
learned in a book. I enjoy the adage: you teach best what you
most need to know.
