Director of Marketing, Minnesota Youth Symphonies

Jennifer A. Haugh
Major(s):
Bachelor of Individualized Studies - Music, History, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature
Current Job Title: Director of Marketing and Development
Organization: Minnesota Youth Symphonies

Brief description of your job:
Grant writing, fundraising, event planning, public relations, press releases, website design and management, graphic design of brochures, programs and advertisements.

Other job titles you have held:
Operations Manager, Minnesota Citizens for the Arts

Legislative Aide, Office of Congressman Bruce F. Vento

How have you found these positions?
I found an internship for the Minnesota Citizens for the Arts through the U of M's Office of Special Learning Opportunities (now Career and Community Learning Center, CCLC) in December 1996. From there, one position led to another.

What skills from your degree do you use in your current work?
My music degree has been enormously helpful, but above all else, my writing abilities and critical thinking skills achieved through coursework at the U of M have been universally applicable.

What advice do you have for current students?
Graduate. Major in what interests you, not necessarily what you think is the most marketable. College, particularly an education in the liberal arts, is a place for developing your interests and becoming an interesting person. Employers want to hire well-rounded, intelligent individuals with good interpersonal and writing skills, so work toward finding yourself and a career will find you.
