Associate Professor of Religion, Claremont Graduate University

Name: Tammi J. Schneider

Major(s): Hebrew

Current Job Title: Associate Professor, Religion

Organization: Claremont Graduate University

Brief description of your job:

I am a professor at Claremont Graduate University which means I only teach graduate students. My degree in Hebrew language actually helped me get into graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania where I earned a doctorate in Ancient History. My first, and only job, I received shortly after graduating, at CGU. I officially teach Hebrew Bible which means that I use my Hebrew on a daily basis. I teach courses in Ancient History (Mesopotamia through Egypt), ancient Languages (primarily Akkadian), Hebrew Bible, and archaeology.

Other job titles you have held:

Coordinator, Middle East Center, University of Pennsylvania

What advice do you have for current students?

Listen to your advisors. I thought I wanted to go to graduate school in linguistics so my advisor sent me to read journals in linguistics which I hated. Then he sent me to the ancient History journals which I LOVED. I called him periodically when I was in graduate school to keep in touch and he kept telling me to keep my Hebrew in good shape. When I finally landed my job one of the main reasons I was hired was because my Hebrew was so good.
