Associate Editor, Mpls/St. Paul magazine

Ingrid Skjong
Major(s):
Journalism
Minor(s): German
Current Job Title: Associate Editor
Organization: Mpls/St Paul magazine

Brief description of your job:
I edit and write feature stories, special sections, and other odds and ends, as well as proofreading all magazine content and collaborating on story ideas. I edit and compile the A&E calendar, handle intern hirings, and write the weekly Weekend Recommender e-mail.

Other job titles you have held:
I was hired at the magazine right out of college after being an intern there for the last half of my senior year, and worked up through the ranks.

What skills from your degree do you use in your current work?
A lot of what I learned in magazine writing and, actually, newspaper writing comes into play. Much of it, though, I learned by actually doing it on the job.

What advice do you have for current students?
Look for internships! They often lead to, at the very least, ins and connections. And go for all the ones you're interested in. I took a crack at a Conde Nast internship during college and was placed at Gourmet for a summer---a total surprise!
